Social Feedback Thread

Bomboclat

Id like to continue the constructive conversations that were taking place in Social’s feedback thread, and the original Support thread that lead to the Social feedback thread.

I intend for this thread to remain constructive, and hope that members will understand that this thread is NOT in Social and thus needs to fall in line with Support’s code of conduct and behavior policies.

This thread is important for the success of the new forum, and I hope site admin’s and support mods will agree that such a thread should exist.

thanks for taking the first step in starting another discussion in Support.
could this have been avoided if the feedback thread in Social was heavily moderated to remove any off-topic banter?

zephyr

I would like input, advice and some direction from the mods of other sub forums as well as smods admin and owners as to what they think could be done to keep Social going well.

It would help members to know what is expected of us.

As far as I can see there is something missing and thast is direction from the mods. In the early stages of this new forum its probably better to have more onfluence by the mods from the get go and not to let old habits continue.

Ya absolutely, the strict on topic policy doesnt work as a blanket rule but it has proven to work in specific threads, e.g. the ban a member nomination thread. That said the wound is still fresh and I understand that members wanted to still battle it out; mod’s would have had quite a bit of work to do in order to keep the thread in Social on topic.

Having this thread in Support allows for an honest conversation to take place outside of the riffraff. Ali can closely monitor the post and ensure it stays on topic.

I think BP and annie are doing what they can. They cannot be on BL 24/7 and that is why there are current open positions and a request for applicants.

quiet roar

Can’t agree with that, zephyr. We need less mod involvement, and since when do we need direction?

I still don’t get the issue with off-topic banter, either – isn’t the lounge one big off-topic forum?

zephyr

Yeah, I dont mean anything against them at all. I recall bp talking about his hesitation to infract but honestly cant recall exactly whole thing.

Anyway. Hope this 3rd attempt stays on point. Ill do my part as much as possible.

yep.

This thread is important for the success of the new forum, and I hope site admin’s and support mods will agree that such a thread should exist.which is exactly why i wrote:

if you have further feedback, post in support…

thanks.

I’m still waiting for a specific example of what was allowed in TL right before it was closed and is not allowed in Social right now.
Beyond what’s clearly stated in the forum guidelines such as prefixfag and calling things gay, at least I think the last one is in there.

Bomboclat

I think the social feedback thread that was closed in social is a good example of that: shit stirring that goes nowhere.

alasdairm

from the lounge guidelines:

If you’re not sure whether something you want to post is problematic, err on the side of caution and don’t post it or contact the mod. team and ask them for their opinion.

Trying to skirt round this rule by masking words or adding a suffix or prefix won’t work either. So don’t call somebody a ‘newfag’ or a ‘fig’ pejoratively. We’ll just assume you mean ‘fag’ and action will be taken anyway.

^ as the direcor of communications, you aren’t communicating much. how do you envision Social?

alasdairm

what do you want to know?

i laid out the reasons for the transition here:
The Bluelight ownership, administrator and senior moderators have, for some time, been discussing The Lounge. In short, we’re concerned about the current state of the forum and feel that some changes need to be made to address the issues:

– The Lounge was always intended to be the social, off-topic forum for all of Bluelight. It has, however, evolved into a place where a small number of users who, for the most part, do not participate anywhere else on the site post an increasingly large amount of content.
– much of content posted in The Lounge today is mean-spirited and offers nothing beyond having a ‘joke’ at the expense of others. It’s deliberately and aggressively non-inclusive. This issue recently came to a head and was brought into sharp relief when the deaths of a couple of members were used as fodder for ‘comedy’.
– there remains a persistent undercurrent of racism and homophobia which manifests in use of racist and homophobic terms as pejoratives. Generally speaking there is a fundamental disconnect between The Lounge staff’s position on the enforcement of site-wide rules and that of the ownership and administration. This tension compounds the problem of discouraging problematic behavior among lounge regulars and, indeed at times, often simply encourages it.

The Lounge has been taken off-line for a day or two while we make some changes which include, but may not be limited to:

– making The Lounge visible to all users (registered and unregistered) and available for posting to all registered users (Bluelighters and Greenlighters).
– rewriting The Lounge guidelines to clearly lay out expectations.
– review the forum moderator team and make changes if/as necessary.

If you have questions or comments in the meantime, please post them here (and only here): the lounge discussion v. september 2016 (http://www.bluelight.org/vb/threads/803646-the-lounge-discussion-v-september-2016)

We’re very happy to answer questions and discuss in more detail but please keep it civil. If you just want to rant or insult and abuse people, rather than discuss issues, then probably better to do that somewhere off-site. General social discussion can, for now, happen in the regional forums.

the linked thread (the lounge discussion v. september 2016 (http://www.bluelight.org/vb/threads/803646-the-lounge-discussion-v-september-2016)) and the social guidelines (http://www.bluelight.org/vb/threads/804930-Social-guidelines) also inform the discussion.

happy to answer any questions.

how do you envision Social? i already asked you???

alasdairm

i envision social as bluelight’s off-topic, social gathering place. i’m happy with the transition to this point and the forum, today, is pretty much how i envisioned it.

alasdair

ghostandthedarknes

thanks for the answer 🙂

Bomboclat

Any word on further changes? Mods? Smods? been awfully quiet lately

alasdairm

i’m not 100% sure what you are asking but the next significant change will be the addition of new staff. the current social staff are in the process of considering applications.

i took a quick look at some numbers yesterday. we don’t have a lot to go on as social has only been open for 25 days but i compared traffic for october 1-25 and august 1-25 and the traffic numbers (top 100 posters) were almost identical (9823 and 10046 posts restively which is a dip of ~2%). encouragingly the percentage of posts contributed by the top 5, 10, 15 and 20 posters has already dropped. considering this from my notes on the lounge before the transition – “… a place where a small number of users who, for the most part, do not participate anywhere else on the site post an increasingly large amount of content…” – i see this as a good thing and i hope the forum continues to become more inclusive.

alasdair

Bomboclat

I think that the forum has been a success, other than the fact that a lot of good members have either left by choice or have been pushed out (for varying reasons). I hope that the trends continue to be successful, but at the same time I wish there would be better retention of older posters.

alasdairm

i think some of the posters who have left were core to the chronic problems so their leaving has been a positive.

thanks.

It would be a very good move on the part of the staff/admin/owners if they participated a little more in Social especially in the beginnings of it to encourage other members to take part.

A point of being inclusive to all was made and since it is inclusive then maybe staff should be more sctive with the members and not just themselves in the staff forums.

Its going fine, really.

^ I dunno what the median age is but papa is 62 and theres a few old farts and some kids who act like they are 90.

I agree it’s going fine.

Don’t agree that the “powers that be” need to be more active – all good if they want to join in the banter, but forcing it won’t work.

I still don’t really get the issue of needing to encourage new members: it either works for you or it doesn’t, and it’s no big deal either way.

zephyr

^ I would do love to answer that really but its prolly not a good idea at all esp in support so wont say what I very honestly think but to be honest the lounge was closed down by staff/owners/admin and social opened as a blank page really.

It just would have helped to have the same people who shut down the last chapter be more involved in opening the new one as it would show some level of care factor.

But yes these things cant be forced and you are right QR.

Yeah I was wrong come to think of it. Stupid idea really.

herbavore

I don’t think its a stupid idea at all, Zeph, and I agree that we all need to participate to make it work. When I said I was “too old” I was joking about how I’ll pop into a thread and make a comment and then come back the next day only to see 8 more pages and that’s just one thread. I am not in front of a computer for most of the day and find that even though I’d like to spend more time in Social, by the time I take care of mod duties and smod duties I’ve spent two hours already. But I am trying to participate more even if it is the sprinkling of lonely little comments here and there.;)
